Oscar-nominated director Julian Schnabel has built his career with compelling biopics from Basquiat and Before Night Falls to The Diving Bell and the Butterfly. Now, he turns his passion for personal stories to the tragedy of Vincent van Gogh with At Eternity’s Gate.

Following its ballyhooed world premiere at the Venice Film Festival, At Eternity’s Gate has revealed its first trailer. This beautiful biopic stars Willem Dafoe as Vincent van Gogh, Rupert Friend as the artist’s beloved brother Theo, Oscar Isaac as his colleague Paul Gauguin, and Mads Mikkelsen as a priest. I know, right?

In his life, van Gogh only ever sold two paintings. He struggled with mental illness and crippling self-doubt that led to grievous self-harm and ultimately suicide at age 37. At Eternity’s Gate will focus on his prolific latter days in Arles, where he painted some of his most famous works (including his Sunflowers) and hoped to build an artist community with Gauguin.

To bring this pivotal moment in art history to life, Schnabel and his co-writer Jean-Claude Carrière confess they blend fact and fantasy. Per the official plot description from CBS films:

This is not a forensic biography, but rather scenes based on Vincent van Gogh’s letters, common agreement about events in his life that present as facts, hearsay, and moments that are just plain invented.
