It’s been a day since the teaser trailer for next summer’s sure-to-be emotional rollercoaster Toy Story 4 dropped, and the news keeps coming. Turns out that new character I’ve been calling “Very Upset Spork With Some Pipe Cleaners On It” is actually named Forky (which is weird, because he’s obviously a spork with some pipe cleaners on it), and he’ll be voiced by Veep and Arrested Development star Tony Hale. I learned this thanks to the new character posters Pixar just dropped:
Check out three new character posters from #ToyStory4, featuring Buzz (voice of @ofctimallen), Forky (voice of @MrTonyHale), and Ducky (voice of @KeeganMKey) & Bunny (voice of @JordanPeele). pic.twitter.com/wrZ5UpMsVR— Toy Story 4 (@toystory) November 13, 2018
And as you can see, he’s not the only new character joining Woody, Buzz, and the gang next June. That last poster introduces a couple of plush toys named Ducky and Bunny, which would be a tad confusing if Pixar hadn’t also gone ahead and released another promotional clip today, giving us a look at them in action. Watch them offer their uniquely enthusiastic reaction to yesterday’s teaser, and see if you can figure out why they seem so familiar…
Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele are voicing Ducky and Bunny, respectively. But specifically, the clip is an obvious homage to one of the more popular running sketches from their Comedy Central show, Key & Peele. Remember the Valets?
This is a delightful bit of marketing, pulling off what Pixar does best: marrying kid-friendly cuteness with jokes and references parents can enjoy. And maybe that’s all it is… or maybe this Key and Peele reunion will go even deeper. Personally, I’ll be waiting to see if Ducky acts as Woody’s anger translator:
