Watch the Trailer for 'The Unforgivable,' Sandra Bullock's First Movie in Three Years

Sandra Bullock doesn’t make a lot of films these days, and she seems to be selective about those she does. She hasn’t been on-screen since 2018’s Bird Box (and Ocean’s 8 that same year), although she has a couple of high-profile projects in the works, including The Lost City of D with Channing Tatum and Brad Pitt, and Bullet Train, also with Brad Pitt.

In December, she’ll star in The Unforgivable for Netflix. The movie is based on a British three-episode miniseries by Sally Wainwright. Christopher McQuarrie was attached to write and direct the film adaptation at one point with Angelia Jolie attached as the lead, but directing duties eventually landed on German director Nora Fingscheidt, while Peter Craig (The Batman, Top Gun: Maverick), Hillary Seitz (the upcoming adaptation of Ruth Ware’s The Woman in Cabin 10), and Courtenay Miles (Mindhunter) took stabs at the screenplay.

Based on the clips I’ve seen of the original series, it’s clear that at least a few updates have been made, relocating the story from the English countryside to America, where issues surrounding race, the prison system, and cop-killing are introduced. The story is about a woman who is released after a 20-year prison sentence for killing a cop, who then attempts to reconnect with her estranged sister in a last-ditch effort for redemption. It also appears that someone is also attempting to kill her in revenge for the police killing.

There’s a hell of a cast here. In addition to Bullock, The Unforgiveable stars Vincent D’Onofrio, Jon Bernthal, Rob Morgan, and Viola Davis. If Davis is among those of whom Bullock’s character faces “severe judgment from the place she once called home” — as it appears in the trailer — expect that judgment to sting. When Viola Davis yells, “You are not a victim!” you best goddamn believe it.

The Unforgiveable premieres on December 10th.
