Remember when Ricky Gervais hosted the Golden Globes in 2010 and he was so shockingly provocative that he swore they’d never invite him back? Remember when he hosted the event three more times after that, always insisting he was too edgy and no-holds-barred for Hollywood? Well, fifth time’s the charm, I suppose.
That’s right, Ricky Gervais has decided that he’s got just enough edge to host the Golden Globes one more time. Just one more, he says, then he’s done. Hayao Miyazaki’s retired fewer times than this dude. In a statement. he said, ‘Once again, they’ve made me an offer I can’t refuse. But this is the very last time I’m doing this, which could make for a fun evening.’
Ooh, I wonder what utterly scandalous comments he’ll make in a roomful of millionaires that will have people so mad at him that they’ll invite him back for the sixth time? You just never can tell with this maverick. He’s like Bono from U2: Always close to the edge.
Paul Telegdy, chairman of NBC Entertainment, said, ‘There is always a palpable electricity in the room when Ricky takes the Globes stage. His return as master of ceremonies at the Golden Globes is much anticipated. It is sure to make for an unexpected evening. We can’t wait to see what he has up his sleeve.’ It’s true, one should always expect the unexpected with a man whose comedic routine hasn’t changed in years and has become an absolute parody of itself. Maybe he’ll make even more transphobic comments this time, or slap Mel Gibson on the back as he facilitates his comeback by letting him be in on the joke and laugh at his own bigoted rhetoric.
Well, I for one can’t wait to hear the truth bombs Gervais plans to drop in exchange for a hefty paycheque from NBCUniversal. At least it will give him some time off from endlessly searching his own name on Twitter to prove how totally unbothered he is by the mildest criticisms people with 64 followers have of him. That’s the best way to show how little you care about people’s opinions. The truly triggered people are the ones you yell at on Twitter while bragging about how much money you make.
And now, please enjoy one of the best tweets of all time.
