There’s several decent trailers for upcoming releases below, but before we hit them, a small announcement that made my damn day: The best actress of her generation, Regina King, has directed a movie called One Night in Miami, which will debut at the Toronto Film Festival. Later this year, Amazon Studios will release it in time for awards season. Now get this description of the movie, based on a play by Kemp Powers:

Set on the night of February 25, 1964, the story follows a young Cassius Clay (before he became Muhammad Ali) as he emerges from the Miami Beach Convention Center the new World Heavyweight Boxing Champion. Against all odds, he defeated Sonny Liston and shocked the sports world. While crowds of people swarm Miami Beach to celebrate the match, Clay - unable to stay on the island because of Jim Crow-era segregation laws - instead spends the night at the Hampton House Motel in one of Miami’s historically black neighborhoods celebrating with three of his closest friends: activist Malcolm X, singer Sam Cooke and football star Jim Brown. The next morning, the four men emerge determined to define a new world for themselves and their people.

And here is the cast:

Holy shit! I wouldn’t be surprised to learn that King is also an excellent director, and this movie has shot up as my most anticipated for the rest of 2020. That’s exactly the movie I want to watch after Trump is voted out of office.

Anyway, here’s several trailers for projects that will be coming out much sooner, beginning with the Netflix original series Teenage Bounty Hunters, from exec producer Jenji Kohan (Orange is the New Black) and showrunner Kathleen Jordan (American Princess). It looks like a teen-targeted series, and I think that’s intentional:

Chemical Hearts is likewise teen oriented, and stars Lili Reinhart (Riverdale) and Austin Abrams (Euphoria, The Walking Dead), based on Krystal Sutherland’s 2016 novel. It looks … OK.

Less exciting is The Comey Rule, due out on Showtime on September 27th. It’s based on James Comey’s book, and stars Jeff Daniels as Comey and Brendan Gleeson as Trump. It’s retch-worthy. I mean, honestly, what wants to watch this?

The Vow is an HBO docuseries about NXIVM, that Keith Raniere/Allison Mack self-improvement/sex cult.

It’s been awhile since we saw a Miranda July film. In fact, it’s been nine years since The Future and 15 since Me and You and Everyone We Know. She’s back with Kajillionaire, which — if anything — has a strong cast: Evan Rachel Wood, Gina Rodriguez, Debra Winger, and Richard Jenkins. I liked Me and You, but The Future was too much for me. This? Probably also on the “too much” side.

Finally, Honest Thief is a Liam Neeson movie. It stars Liam Neeson, who has been cast to play a Liam Neeson character. It says it’ll be in theaters on October 9th. We’ll see about that … er, sorry. (Liam Neeson voice): WE’LL SEE ABOUT THAT.
