When it comes to adaptations of beloved stories, I usually feel no conflict about enjoying the book AND looking forward to seeing it portrayed on the big screen. Bad adaptations don’t ruin the original, just like great adaptations don’t erase it. But I can honestly say, this time… I almost wish I’d never read the book, so I could go in fresh and let the surprises hit me all over again.

Almost.

We Have Always Lived In The Castle — In Theaters and On Demand May 17
While The Haunting of Hill House is probably Shirley Jackson’s most well-known work, I have always preferred We Have Always Lived In The Castle — not just as a piece of fiction, but as a reading experience. The atmosphere, the characters, and the twist combined to make it a tangible moment in my life. I don’t just remember the plot — I remember the feeling I had as I read it, the alienation and anticipation and creeping dread seeming to overwhelm me from page to page. And while I’m not sure if any movie can give me that same experience, I’m looking forward to seeing this one try! Taissa Farmiga and Alexandra Daddario star as sisters living in isolation with their uncle (Crispin Glover), until a hot cousin (Sebastian Stan) arrives to shake things up. Family secrets and a pretty unique brand of craziness awaits!

Shadow — In theaters May 3
From director Zhang Yimou (Hero, House of Flying Daggers, and yes OK — The Great Wall) comes a beautiful martial arts adventure about a literal shadow operative and, I don’t know, deadly bladed parasols? Whatever, I’m into it.

Over in the streaming world, Amazon Prime is straight-up showing off now. First there’s this little behind-the-scenes look at Good Omens (May 31) with some fresh footage:

And then there’s THIS teaser for their upcoming adaptation of The Boys, based on the comics by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson:

Technically this isn’t the first look we’ve had at the series, but it certainly is the first one to give us anything substantive — and as you can tell, this isn’t some family-friendly tale of caped crusaders. Karl Urban stars as the leader of a covert team tasked to monitor the antics of a degenerate, corporate-sponsored group of superheroes… and step in if they abuse their powers. Like say if one of them CRUSHES A DUDE’S SKULL DURING ORAL SEX. For example. Created by Preacher’s Evan Goldberg and Seth Rogan and Supernatural’s Eric Kripke, The Boys premieres July 26 on Amazon Prime.

Don’t worry though, Netflix still has plenty going on:

The Perfection — Coming to Netflix May 24
Allison Williams stars as a musical prodigy who reunites with her former mentor (Steven Weber) and meets his latest star pupil (Logan Browning)… and then gives her maggots? WHAT IS EVEN HAPPENING?! Reviewers loved this one when it played at Fantastic Fest, but they were also pretty careful not to give too much away — which is always a good sign for a thriller.

And over on Showtime, we’ve got a trailer for a prestige miniseries that’s, uh, probably gonna be a rough watch:

The Loudest Voice — Premiere June 30th on Showtime
Charting the rise and fall of former Fox News chairman Roger Ailes, the show stars an almost unrecognizable Russell Crowe gunning for an Emmy as Ailes and a helmet blonde Naomi Watts as Gretchen Carlson (Sienna Miller, Josh Charles, Seth McFarlane and Annabelle Wallis also star). On the one hand, it’s sure to be a compelling tale of real-life villainy. But on the other hand… I’ve got the actual Fox News for that.

And because I just can’t leave you on THAT note, here’s a palate-cleanser: Chilling Adventures of Sabrina star Chance Perdomo, eating the greatest creation in the history of the culinary arts, poutine. Because apparently we (and by we, I mean ME, specifically) really can have it all.

YOU’RE WELCOME. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’ll, uh, be in my bunk.
