A lot about pregnancy can be used for horror movie fodder. The trope about scary old people trying to kill you and steal your baby is one of my favorites (see Rosemary’s Baby.) Mix that in with a heavy measure of Reconstruction Era racism and you’ve got A24s The Front Room.

Written and directed by Sam and Max Eggers (The Lighthouse) with novelist/playwright Susan Hill, The Front Room stars Brandy Norwood (aka Brandy) Kathryn Hunter (Poor Things), and Andrew Burnap (Under The Banner Of Heaven) as the most sniveling movie husband ever.

If Brandy doesn’t get to murder this creepy old woman in a satisfyingly bloody way at the end of this movie we riot.

The Front Room opens in theaters on September 6th.

Hysterical and styled like Jackie Onassis works well for Natalie Portman in the upcoming Apple TV+ series Lady In The Lake.

Based on the novel by Laura Lippman, and not to be confused with the 1943 Raymond Chandler novel The Lady In The Lake, the series also stars Moses Ingram (Obi-Wan Kenobi) and is directed by Alma Har’el (Honey Boy.)

I’m very into the dreamy visual aesthetic, and the costumes are *chef’s kiss* perfect. Lady In The Lake begins July 19th on Apple TV+

Being a teenager will never get easier, will it? Dìdi (弟弟) is set in 2008, but there’s a timelessness to these types of coming-of-age stories, and the good ones will always endure. Filmmaker Sean Wang is popular on the film festival circuit and this film has already won a couple of awards at this year’s Sundance.

Dìdi stars Izaac Wang (Good Boys, Raya And The Last Dragon) and opens in theaters on July 26th.

For this week’s lagniappe, I ask the important question: Who wants to watch the Watchmen again? Warner Bros. has created an animated version of Alan Moore’s renowned graphic novel (that has also been a movie and a streaming series.) While they’ve pretty much blown it with their DCU movies, Warner Bros. still produces some great animation.
