I’m sure that most of you are familiar with Alex Garland, if not for his novel The Beach (adapted into a mediocre Leo DiCaprio movie), then for writing 28 Days Later or directing Ex Machina or Annihilation (which he also adapted). If you enjoy slow-burn, creepy-ass movies, you also love A24, the studio behind Hereditary, Midsommar, The Witch, and, well, Ex Machina. Jessie Buckley, meanwhile, was nominated for an Oscar for her role in The Lost Daughter just yesterday, and if you don’t know her from Fargo season four or Chernobyl, trust that you will be seeing a lot of her in future years (and here’s selfishly hoping that she doesn’t get sucked up by the MCU).

Garland, A24, and Jessie Buckley is a potent combination, and the trailer for Men (directed and written by Garland) is exactly what you might expect, or as Kaleena calls it, “What a beautifully shot nope.” It is unnerving as hell, and the nice thing about the trailer is that, after a minute and a half, you’ll be intrigued but still have no idea what Men is about other than the logline provided, “A young woman goes on a solo vacation to the English countryside after the death of her ex-husband.”

It also stars Rory Kinnear, Paapa Essiedu, and almost certainly the specter of grief.

A24 will release Men on May 20, 2022.
