Mojang has been making bank off of our kids with Minecraft since the video game was released in 2011. If your kid is a player and you’ve never been asked to pay for skins or maps, they have definitely shaken you down for Minecraft merch over the years. Lego sets, tee shirts, bed sheets, bath bombs, posters, action figures and all sorts of home decor.
There’s a Minecraft Shorts series on Prime that’s not associated with Mojang and there are countless YouTubers with millions of followers who get paid to post videos of gameplay and to test mods. It is its own industry.
The live-action Minecraft movie was first announced in 2014. It has been the subject of rumors and speculation for ten years, and today, there’s finally a teaser trailer.
My thirteen-year-old, whose entire identity was Minecraft for a few years, visibly cringed when I showed that to him. But I am sure we’re going to watch it because he made me watch Five Nights At Freddy’s TWICE, despite never even having played that game.
The creature animation is fun. The llama made me laugh. I don’t know what Jason Momoa is doing in this movie with that terrible wig, though. And, while I believe in Jack Black’s magical ability to save almost any movie he appears in, I don’t know how he’s Steve at all. But sure, let him Skadoosh all over The Overworld and battle some zombie piglins (formerly pigmen). I hope he remembers not to look The Enderman in the eye.
A Minecraft Movie has inexplicably lined up an incredible cast that includes Emma Myers (Wednesday), Jennifer Coolidge, Steve Carell, Matt Berry, Jermaine Clement, Kate McKinnon, and Danielle Brooks.
It will premiere in theaters on April 4th, 2025.
