Did You Need an Emma Thompson Written Movie Starring Emilia Clarke and Henry Golding Inspired by the Music of George Michael?

Honestly, I didn’t think I needed an Emma Thompson-written movie starring Emilia Clarke and Henry Golding inspired by the music of George Michael, but having seen the trailer, Last Christmas is in my life now, and I think we’re all going to be better for it.

It’s been a while since we had a good Christmas movie (discounting 2015’s Krampus, of course), and with Last Christmas, Emma Thompson may be trying to associate herself with a better Christmas movie than Love, Actually (no offense, ahem), if only to put the pain of that scene inspired by her divorce with Kenneth Branagh behind her.

The film also features the music of George Michael, who gave the film his blessing before his passing. It includes several thematic nods to George Michael’s passions, too, like homelessness advocacy. George Michael passed away on Christmas Day 2016. An unreleased track will play at the end of Last Christmas.

This would be the third(?) movie in 2019 inspired by a musician, following Rocketman (Elton John), Yesterday (The Beatles) and this weekend’s Blinded by the Light (Bruce Springsteen).

In addition to Emilia Clarke and Henry Golding, Last Christmas also stars Thompson, Michelle Yeoh, and Patti LuPone. Paul Feig (Bridesmaids) directed the film, which opens on November 8th.
