They’re finally here. The 91st Academy Award nominations were announced this morning/afternoon (well, I’m on GMT, don’t know about you) by Kumail Nanjiani and Tracee Ellis Ross (someone put them in a rom-com already). And the results?

Well…

Look, I expect nothing from the Oscars now and I’m still kinda bummed. Bohemian Rhapsody getting a Best Picture nomination truly stings but alas, I was predicting it so I wasn’t as devastated as I could have been. but what a slap in the face its presence in that category is, for very obvious reasons. Fuck Bryan Singer. Also isn’t it stupid that we have this Best Picture system where we don’t just fill out the category to 10 nominees? There’s room for If Beale Street Could Talk, among many others!

I would say the biggest actual shock of the morning is no Bradley Cooper in Best Director. We’d all just assumed it would happen because the narrative was in his favour, but nope, he isn’t there. Adam McKay is, which makes me wonder if a lot of these voters actually saw Vice. The big surprise name in that category is Polish director Paweł Pawlikowski for Cold War.

Some other surprises: Two acting nominations for Roma, which is wonderful and well-deserved; nothing for Ethan Hawke in First Reformed - for my money the best performance of 2018 - which wasn’t a shock but Willem Dafoe getting in there ahead of him certainly was; no Best Documentary Feature nomination for Won’t You Be My Neighbor?; No Claire Foy in Best Supporting Actress; No women directors nominated… Okay, not a surprise but I still feel like we should be mad about that; that editing category is weird and full of bad choices that could easily have been rectified; no If Beale Street Could Talk in Best Cinematography but the German film Never Look Away squeaked in there, giving another Oscar nomination to Caleb Deschanel.
