This week’s trailers are all about the casts. With the right people involved even the most questionable material can be funny, thought-provoking, or turn a subject you have no interest in into something you feel compelled to watch. Casting agents should be awards eligible.
Take Clipped, for example. Do I care at all about Donald Sterling, the racist douchecanoe who owned the LA Clippers? No. Am I interested in watching Ed O’Neil wear a terrible hairpiece in a six-episode miniseries about his downfall? Absolutely. Laurence Fishburne as Doc Rivers and Jacki Weaver (Poms) as Shelly Sterling sealed the deal.
Clipped also features Kelly AuCoin, Corbin Bernsen, Cleopatra Coleman (Infinity Pool), and Petri Hawkins Byrd (the bailiff on Judge Judy.) It begins streaming on FX on June 4th.
Cora Bora is either going to be a wonderful little story or it’s going to be an entire cringe-fest. Either way, Manny Jacinto is in it. But wait, there’s more! Cora Bora stars Megan Stalter (Hacks) and also features Chelsea Peretti, Heather Elizabeth Morris (Glee), Margaret Cho, Ayden Mayeri, Caitlin Reilly, Jojo T. Gibbs, and Darrell Hammond.
Cora Bora premieres in theaters on June 14th.
Today, I learned that Hamish Linklater and Lily Rabe are romantic partners, and they’re making their directorial debut with Downtown Owl. The film is based on a novel by Chuck Klosterman and stars Rabe (The Undoing, American Horror Story), Ed Harris, Vanessa Hudgens, Henry Golding, and Finn Wittrock (American Horror Story). Bearded, cowboy Henry Golding is entirely my jam.
Downtown Owl is available for purchase on AppleTV+ and Prime Video.
It is an indisputable truth that the world would be a darker, drearier place if we’d never had Jim Henson in it. I cried myself to dehydration watching the trailer for Idea Man, the Disney+ biopic about him. Get your tissues ready for this week’s laginappe.
