There will come a day when we don’t get any more new Steven Spielberg movies. The prolific director has been making movies for over 50 years. It’s gotten to the point where we take him for granted. His last two films (The Fabelmans and West Side Story) were impeccable masterpieces by one of the best to ever do it. They dropped during a pandemic, which hurt their box office significantly, but both films should be bigger culturally (dagnabbit).
Spielberg, during the latter part of his career, is putting out some of his best work. I wasn’t excited about a West Side Story remake but was greeted with a beautiful version of the famed musical. The Fabelmans was an exquisite meditation on family and filmmaking. It felt like Spielberg was giving us his last film. His swan song. If it were his last film, it would be a fitting tribute to a fabulous career. But there is another.
Steven (we’re on a first-name basis) will be returning to his old stomping grounds with his new film. The plot has yet to be revealed, but the movie is rumored to involve UFOs. David Koepp will be writing the script and it’s aiming for a May 2026 release. A big summer movie from the king of big summer movies! Sign me up! The news only gets more exciting when you learn who he’s courting as one of his leads.
Deadline reports that Emily Blunt is rumored to be joining Spielberg’s next film. The actress recently starred in The Fall Guy and earned an Oscar nomination for her role in Oppenheimer. She has never worked with Spielberg but would be a pretty stellar fit for an Amblin movie directed by the Amblin Man. It feels like a match made in heaven.
Spielberg is not perfect, but given his current streak, I expect big things from his next outing. Certainly, the excitement will increase when we learn who will star alongside Blunt (the film is rumored to be a two-hander). There already feels like an inherent magic to what Spielberg is doing. We must cherish it because, at some point, we won’t have it anymore.
