The Fabelmans is the first movie that Steven Spielberg has written himself since Poltergeist, and it couldn’t be more obvious. The film, co-written by Tony Kushner, is clearly autobiographical, centering on a young, aspiring filmmaker, who is clearly affected by the divorce of his parents (Paul Dano and Michelle Williams). His parents were Jewish; his mother was a pianist; his first short film involved crashing his toy trains; he was in the Boy Scouts; and he fell in love with movies and moviemaking.

It’s all there in the trailer: A Spielberg movie about Spielberg. It debuted at TIFF over the weekend to really good reviews. It’s hard to know if there is still a big appetite for late-career Spielberg — the most commercially successful director of all time — in movie theaters in 2022.

I hope so.

The Fabelmans arrives in theaters this November.
