Spike Jonze's 'Beastie Boys Story' Apple TV+ Documentary Has a Trailer, and Yes, I'm Crying About MCA

It makes perfect sense for Spike Jonze to direct the Beastie Boys documentary Beastie Boys Story. If you needed a reminder, Jonze directed the video for “Sabotage,” one of the absolute best videos of all time. If you don’t agree, sorry, you’re wrong, goodbye, you are excommunicated from my life.

Anyway, Jonze’s Beastie Boys Story looks pretty intriguing—essentially like a performative documentary? The trailer for the “live documentary” released by Apple TV+ makes it look like Beastie Boys Mike Diamond (Mike D) and Adam Horovitz (ADROCK) will be onstage, commenting on the documentary as it unfurls, which adds an additional layer of engagement past a more traditional nonfiction film. And yes, Adam Yauch is all over this thing, and I don’t know how you could tell a story about the Beastie Boys without him. RIP, MCA.

Here’s the trailer for Beastie Boys Story, which will premiere at SXSW in March before hitting Apple TV+ on April 24. That gives you enough time to read Beastie Boys Book beforehand, a gigantic, beautiful memoir from ADROCK and Mike D that came out in 2018. The doc will join Apple TV+’s admittedly limited but expanding slate of original content, including Hala, The Morning Show, and Kumail Nanjiani and Emily V. Gordon’s Little America, which I’m watching as we speak. Or type, I guess? Anyway, here’s Beastie Boys Story, pass me some tissues.
