The New 'Spider-Man: Far From Home' Trailer Really Leans into the Multiverse (Or Does It?)

The new Spider-Man: Far From Home trailer dropped this morning, and for the first time in Marvel Studios history, the footage came with a spoiler warning from Spidey himself, Tom Holland. Which is ironic given Holland’s reputation for blurting out more reveals than Twitter when Game of Thrones is on. However, the warning is entirely justified, so on that note:

SPOILER ALERT FOR ‘AVENGERS: ENDGAME’

NO, SERIOUSLY, I’M ABOUT TO DROP A HUGE ONE IN THE NEXT SENTENCE

YOU WERE WARNED…

Right off the bat, the trailer straight-up opens with the fact that Iron Man is dead. It doesn’t even hesitate, which pivots Far From Home from a goofy, vacation-gone-awry movie to a slightly more somber reflection on Spider-Man grappling with a world without Tony Stark. Or at least as somber as a trailer with a dick punch can be.

Anyway… the other huge “reveal” is that Jake Gyllenhaal’s Mysterio is from an alternate reality, or as Spidey flat-out calls it, the Multiverse. On the surface, this appears to be Marvel confirming that the time-traveling shenanigans of Endgame are going to have serious (and apparently immediate) repercussions on the future of the MCU. There’s just one small problem:

Mysterio is full of sh*t. Or at least he is in the comics. The guy’s entire schtick is crafting insanely life-like illusions, so it’s a pretty safe bet that he’s yanking everyone’s chain in Far From Home and isn’t from a parallel dimension, which to be frank, is kind of a sh*tty thing to tease. Thanks to this trailer, you’ve now got fans absolutely freaking out that a live-action Spider-Verse is coming to the MCU when there’s a pretty good chance those hopes are going to be dashed. — Or maybe they won’t!

If there’s one thing Captain Marvel taught us, it’s that “body language expert” is a fake-ass profession. But it also taught us that Marvel isn’t afraid to eschew the comics and take characters in completely unexpected directions. So for all we know, Mysterio really is from the Multiverse, and sh*t’s about to get crazy.

At any rate, here’s the trailer, and I’ll fling my wild-eyed predictions for Far From Home below.

So here’s my barely-educated guess: Far From Home ends with Mysterio being just some dude and not a multi-dimensional traveler. This reveal causes Peter to fully accept Tony’s death and the responsibility to make him proud as Spider-Man. The credits roll, but oh wait, what’s this? A strange, cryptic hint that there actually is a multiverse, and it’s spilling into the MCU?! WHAAA? The End.

Of course, the real question is what the hell happens to Spidey after Far From Home, because as of this writing, there is no official word on whether Sony will allow Marvel to “borrow” the character past their original five-film agreement. I’m talking Far From Home could be the very last time Spider-Man interacts with the MCU before Sony yanks him back and forces him to share a universe with Venom (ft. Eminem) and Jared Leto.

That’s not the Spider-Verse you’re looking for.
