'Scott Pilgrim Vs The World' Sure Has A Lot Of Superheroes And Villains In It

Colloquially speaking, Love Actually would appear to hold the record for “Movie with most actors in it who went on to become nerd royalty in giant genre-focused franchises.” But while actors in the 2001 romantic comedy have played Jedi and zombie-hunters and hobbits and Westerosi psychics, only one of them (January Jones, for some reason) has ever played a superhero or villain. Unless you count Martin Freeman’s role in Civil War and Black Panther, I guess, but I would argue that since he wears a regular suit and tie and doesn’t have powers or cool abilities, he’s more superhero-adjacent.

But you know what movie does have a surprising amount of actors who either played superheroes and villains in the past, or went on to portray them later? Edgar Wright’s Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World., which boasted the following packed roster:

Brie Larson

Heroes don’t get more super than Captain Marvel.

Brandon Routh

This guy’s done double duty as the Atom and Superman, so he should arguably count for two here. Just sayin’.

Chris Evans

Evans also has two superhero roles under his belt as Johnny Storm and Captain America.

Michael Cera

Don’t forget, Cera played Dick Grayson in The LEGO Batman Movie, which means he’s the first Robin we’ve had on screen since Chris O’Donnell in Batman Forever. No, I’m not counting Joseph Gordon Levitt, because that’s ridiculous.

Mary Elizabeth Winstead

Sure, Mary’s credit as Gwen Grayson in Sky High came before her role in Scott Pilgrim, but it makes her a superhero all the same. Also, look me in the eye and tell me you would not be down for a Sky High cinematic universe.

Mae Whitman

In addition to being everybody’s favorite pick to play Squirrel Girl (except for the people who’d prefer to see Stranger Things star Shannon Purser), Mae’s also been lending her voice to Batgirl in the DC Super Hero Girls.

Aubrey Plaza

If you didn’t watch any of Legion, then you are missing out on the greatest performance Aubrey Plaza has ever given as the Shadow King. Binge it just for her.

Bill Hader

You know that “Scott Pilgrim earned the power of love!” narration? That was done by Bill Hader, who also voices Dr. Malocchio in Hulu’s superhero animated comedy, The Awesomes.
