When we were children, its stories rattled us; its illustrations haunted us. This summer, Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark is coming to theaters to terrify us all over again, bringing both Alvin Schwartz’s worrisome words and Stephen Gammell’s dastardly drawings to life. But you don’t have to wait for a sneak peek of the horrors to come. CBS Films and Lionsgate teased some of the terror last night during the Super Bowl with four brief but biting spots.
Master of monsters Guillermo del Toro has shepherded this adaptation, serving as producer and co-writer. At the helm is André Øvredal, who broke through with the original and wildly entertaining Trollhunter, then followed that thrilling adventure with the deeply chilling The Autopsy of Jane Doe. The movie version of Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark will string together several of Schwartz’s shorts by centering on a group of kids who must face their fears to save their town. From what? Take a look at the teasers to find out!
If you wondered how Gammell’s sketches would translate to live action, now you know.

Also unveiled are a creepy poster and a richer synopsis:
It’s l968 in America. Change is blowing in the wind…but seemingly far removed from the unrest in the cities is the small town of Mill Valley where for generations, the shadow of the Bellows family has loomed large. It is in their mansion on the edge of town that Sarah, a young girl with horrible secrets, turned her tortured life into a series of scary stories, written in a book that has transcended time—stories that have a way of becoming all too real for a group of teenagers who discover Sarah’s terrifying tome.
Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark opens August 9.
