You get a lot of bang for your buck with Roland Emmerich movies. Literally. Bangs, booms, and explosions are his specialty.
With a résumé spanning decades, Emmerich is the master of the summer blockbuster. Even when they aren’t great movies, they’re GREAT movies that get audiences cheering and are eminently rewatchable.
We haven’t heard from Roland since 2019’s Midway. Now he’s back, and he’s bringing the moon with him.
The plot is boilerplate. A mysterious force has knocked the moon out of orbit, AND IT’S HEADED STRAIGHT TOWARD US! With only weeks to save the planet, a ragtag team (I assume) comes together to launch a last-ditch mission (it’s always last) that forces them to leave behind loved ones (it’s never the unloved folks who save the planet), and reveals secrets of the moon we never would have expected. It’s an alien base, right? Perhaps it really is made of cheese. What a delicious disaster that would be! Whatever it is, I trust that NASA executive and former astronaut Jo Fowler (Halle Berry) will save us all!
Written AND directed by Roland Emmerich, Moonfall also stars Patrick Wilson, K.C. Houseman, Michael Peña, Charlie Plummer, Kelly Yu, Eme Ikwuakor, Carolina Bartczak, and Donald Sutherland.
Sorry, I just love that gif.
Moonfall opens in theaters on February 4th, 2022. If the planet lasts that long. You never know when we’re talking about Emmerich.
