Quentin Tarantino’s ninth movie, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, is awaiting its July release after premiering to strong reviews at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. The Oscar-winning director has claimed that he plans to stop making films after he reaches number ten, although it remains to be seen if he’ll stick to that promise or do a Soderbergh style comeback. We’re still not entirely sure what that tenth film will be, although talk has swirled for a long time now that QT will bow out with his own Star Trek movie. He’s a big fan of the series and has been open about his desire to make a full-blown R-rated version of it.

In an upcoming interview with Empire, Tarantino confirmed that he’s all in on the final frontier. ‘It’s an R-rated movie’, he said. ‘If I do it, it’ll be R-rated.’ We didn’t see that coming. He also said, ‘There’s a script that exists for it now. I need to weigh in on it, but I haven’t been able to do that yet’, and confirmed that it will be very sweary.

So he’s totally asked someone at the Roddenberry estate what the N word is in Klingon, right?

Look, I have a lot of feelings on Tarantino. I genuinely love most of his work and think Inglourious Basterds is his masterpiece, but it’s also hard to watch his films without talking about the many issues of appropriation, not to forget his Weinstein connections and what happened to Uma Thurman. But even with all of that aside, I feel like an R-rated Trek story could be interesting, although I worry it would descend too much into the sort of edgy nihilism that the Trek universe has always rejected. It’s also a toss up as to whether Paramount would want to take this route with the franchise, which has stalled in recent years with a fourth film shelved due to various reasons. A Tarantino Trek would undoubtedly be a fascinating anomaly, but would it be one worth the cost? Trek films are pricey and the last one wasn’t as big a hit as it needed to be. Still, if Tarantino is serious about bowing out on the tenth film, there would be a real prestige in being the studio that let him do it with such a beloved property. But personally, I’d be more intrigued to see Tarantino to a straight-up PG Trek movie. How does he challenge himself when he can’t swear or get violent? I would certainly be up for that film.
