As a counterpoint to last year’s highly successful Baz Luhrmann spectacle, Elvis, Sofia Coppola’s Priscilla seems way more grounded in the realities of love under the microscope of fame and power. Coppola has cemented her place in the pantheon of film directors by telling ethereal, dream-like stories about women’s desires. Partnering with A24, a production company known for risk-taking films, indicates this one is probably going to produce enjoyment and anger in equal parts for audiences. Elvis fans are the original “toxic fandom” and they are not going to like this darker portrayal of The King by Jacob Elordi. But Cailee Spaeny looks about ready to knock our bobby socks off.

Priscilla will be in theaters on November 3rd.

Sam Esmail (Mr. Robot, Homecoming) has put together a powerhouse of a cast for a Netflix movie. Julia Roberts, Ethan Hawke, Mahershala Ali, Myha’la, and Kevin Bacon (who looks a lot like Ethan Hawke here, or vice versa?) will star in Leave The World Behind, based on the book by Rumaan Alam. I know that we’ve all fallen victim to the Netflix-Movie-Formula before bur this one actually looks like it might be interesting.

A family’s (Julia Roberts and Ethan Hawke) vacation is upended when two strangers (Mahershala Ali and Myha’la) arrive at night, seeking refuge from a cyberattack that grows more terrifying by the minute, forcing everyone to come to terms with their places in a collapsing world.

Leave The World Behind will open in select theaters in November and will be available to stream on Netflix on December 8th.

Pet Sematary: Bloodlines starts streaming today on Paramount+. There’s no way it can hold a candle to the original, but it does star David Duchovny, Pam Grier, Henry Thomas, Samantha Mathis, and Jackson White (Mrs. Fletcher) as young Jud Crandall. So, it can’t be ALL bad.

In 1969, a young Jud Crandall is set to leave his hometown of Ludlow, Maine in search of his life’s purpose. Before he makes it out, however, Jud and his childhood friends encounter an ancient evil that has gripped Ludlow since its founding.

Thank The Old Gods for this weird, spooky-season gift, and check it out this weekend on Paramount+. If you dare. Bwahahahahahaha.

This week’s Lagniappe is dedicated to all of us weirdos who tried to introduce our friends to Troma films and Kentucky Fried Movie when we were younger and were rightfully labeled “weirdo” for it. I was not entirely convinced The Toxic Avenger needed a remake. Still, this teaser got me pretty excited for the new version that stars Peter Dinklage, Elijah Wood, Jacob Tremblay, Taylour Paige (Zola), Julia Davis (Run Rabbit Run), and Kevin Bacon. It looks like it’s going to be pretty faithful to vibe of the original.

The Toxic Avenger had its premiere at Austin’s Fantasy Fest in September, but no official release date has been announced. Sigh. Give. It. To. Me. Now!
