This summer, Warner Bros. was planning to dominate the box office with two star-studded, feel-good tentpoles: Wonder Woman 1984 and In The Heights. Now, with theaters across the nation closed, the studio has pushed these much-anticipated films to postponements.
The debut of Wonder Woman 1984 has moved from June 5 to August 14, while In The Heights has been pushed from August 6 to an undetermined future date. However, filmmakers from both camps assure these films won’t go the way of Trolls World Tour and The Lovebirds, skipping theaters to go straight to VOD and streaming.
Patty Jenkins, director of Wonder Woman and its sequel, took to Twitter to announce:
“We made Wonder Woman 1984 for the big screen and I believe in the power of cinema. In these terrible times, when theater owners are struggling as so many are, we are excited to re-date our film to August 14th 2020 in a theater near you, and pray for better times for all by then”
Here’s her tweet, complete with a Wonder Woman vid that proudly declares “only in theaters.”

Also on Twitter, Lin-Manuel Miranda shared a note from himself, Quiara Alegría Hudes, his co-writer of the hit Broadway musical on which In the Heights is based, and the movie’s director, Jon M. Chu. It reads:
“We had the best summer of our lives filming #InTheHeightsMovie last year. We gathered in Washington Heights and told this story, on location in this neighborhood, with our neighbors in the community. We couldn’t wait to share it with you.
But we’re going to have to wait a little longer. With the uncertainty in the world, right now, In the Heights is being postponed.
When we can release it safely again, flags in hand, we will be there, enjoying this movie in theaters.
We’ll have the premiere uptown.
The best summer of our lives, together.
Patience & Faith.
Paciencia & Fe.
Siempre.
Lin, Quiara & Jon”
Here’s the tweet, QTed by Chu, who also helmed the Pajiba favorite Crazy Rich Asians:
FYI we will have a big friggin party when we get to see it on the big screen! And we will all be together again dancing in the aisles!! Stay healthy and take care of your family in the meantime. 👇ðŸ¼ðŸ‘‡ðŸ¼ðŸ‘‡ðŸ¼ https://t.co/ATbao2rcXT

Then, Miranda followed up with a tweeted video of him singing “It Won’t Be Long Now,” from In The Heights, calling for donations to Broadway Cares. The organization is raising funds for Broadway workers who are out of work as the Great White Way is shuttered.
