Warner Bros. has locked down Adam Wingard (The Guest, Death Note), one of Hollywood’s most interesting young directors, who has a gift for horror, as the director for Godzilla vs. Kong (2020). The film is being presented as the crown jewel tentpole film of the studio’s MonsterVerse (uuuuugh, Universal should have snapped up that title, Dark Universe sucks).

It is rare now days for Hollywood to allow up and coming directors to get a few features under their belt before giving them the keys to a big league IP. While most of Wingard’s previous films were micro-budgeted small features, he will hopefully have enough experience as a director to feel confident handling a blockbuster film (unlike the director of a certain 2015 Fantastic Flop). Wingard’s background leaves me cautiously optimistic Godzilla vs. Kong will amp up the horror elements that bubble beneath the surface of the mighty monsters, rather than morphing into yet another generic blockbuster.

Godzilla vs. Kong is scheduled to be released May 22, 2020.
