Now We Know Why Colin Trevorrow Was Fired From 'Star Wars': Because He's An Asshole

Turns out, certain white male directors can fail upwards for only so long, and what we have been discovering of late is that the ceiling for directors who lack the requisite talent is apparently Star Wars movies. It’s not always that lack of talent catches up to directors; sometimes, simply being an asshole can get you fired.

To wit: According to a source with knowledge who spoke to Vulture, the lack of talent plus being an asshole is apparently the combination that finally got Treverrow fired:

“During the making of Jurassic World, he focused a great deal of his creative energies on asserting his opinion,” the executive explains. “But because he had been personally hired by Spielberg, nobody could say, ‘You’re fired.’ Once that film went through the roof and he chose to do Henry, [Trevorrow] was unbearable. He had an egotistical point of view— and he was always asserting that.”

Then, during preproduction on Episode IX, Trevorrow’s relationship with Lucasfilm top brass became reportedly “unmanageable” over the course of “repeated stabs at multiple drafts” of the script.

“When the reviews for Book of Henry came out, there was immediately conjecture that Kathy was going to dump him because they weren’t thrilled with working with him anyway,” the executive continues. “He’s a difficult guy. He’s really, really, really confident. Let’s call it that.”

For those of you who have read or seen any interviews with Trevorrow, that assessment seems to check out. I would add one more based on what I have seen: His ego is very fragile, which is not uncommon for directors (or people, in general) whose talent does not equal the ego. If you got it, you ain’t gotta strut it, because people know. But if you ain’t got it, all the strutting in the world won’t obscure the lack of it. It’ll catch up, although it may take a failed Jurassic Park movie before it does so.
