We’re only two months away from San Diego Comic Con and you can practically smell the fear from the pop culture journalists terrified of covering the gargantuan event. SDCC is still widely considered the biggest date on the blockbuster calendar in terms of fan events that intersect with major studio marketing, and over the years, it’s become tradition for the huge A-List franchises to strut their stuff in Hall H. That’s dropped off a little bit over the past few years as Disney stick to their own expo, D23, but that also gave Warner Bros. plenty of room to strut their stuff. Well, that’s not happening this year either, as it was revealed that Warner Bros. would be sitting out SDCC 2019. Their only major movie presence at the upcoming event will be for IT: Chapter Two. That means no Birds of Prey, no Godzilla vs. Kong, no Dune, no Joker, no big Hall H announcement for R-Battz, and no Wonder Woman 1984.

There’s a lot to unpack here. First of all, I can’t believe Warner Bros. will deny me the exquisite agony of Joaquin Phoenix being forced to promote Joker at Hall H. I’ve been waiting all year for that train-wreck! Second, this seems to signal a scaling back of sorts for Warner Bros. There’s never been any solid data to show a direct correlation between Hall H/SDCC presence and box office profit, so perhaps it’s not worth their while any more. SDCC isn’t the only game in town anymore, and there may simply be better and way cheaper ways to get the marketing job done. DC and Warner Bros. will still have a Comic Con presence on the floor itself, so fans should not fear. Still, given that Warner Bros. basically could have had the run of Hall H should they so desire, this is an unexpected decision.

And in lieu of no big Hall H moment for Patty Jenkins’s upcoming Wonder Woman sequel, the director revealed a shiny new poster on Twitter!

So pretty! Much ’80s. I can practically hear the Duran Duran music. Wonder Woman 1984 sees the return of Gal Gadot and Best Chris Pine, plus Kristen Wiig as Cheetah and Pedro Pascal in an as-yet unannounced role. As the title shows, the film takes place during the Cold War in the 1980s and we are expecting every level of shoulder pads. The film is scheduled for a June 5, 2020 release.
