Netflix's 'Carter' Promises Real-Time Action with A Side of Motion Sickness

As previously discussed, I’m a sucker for 2 things: genre entertainment from Asia, and well-made one man against the world standoffs. Writer-director Byung-gil Jung and Netflix have promised both with Carter, arriving next month. The setup is deceptively simple. A man (Joo Won) wakes up with recent scars, no memory, and a voice in his head. His name is Carter, and all his questions will be answered if he finds a young girl named Jung-Ha-na and delivers her to North Korea. Something in her blood makes her the cure to the world’s latest plague. Despite the amnesia, Carter apparently retains a very dangerous set of skills, and he uses them to punch, kick, and otherwise demolish the small army of men standing in his way.

A quick warning: If you’re vulnerable to sudden bouts of motion sickness, this is not the trailer for you.

The tag promises non-stop action and the trailer delivers, though I might need a Dramamine for the whole thing. Byung-gil Jung’s most recent movie, The Villainess, demonstrated his “real-time” action skills with several fantastic fight scenes, including a 4-person swordfight while on motorcycles with several fantastic long takes. That said, the shaky-cam and twirling perspective may be difficult for some viewers to handle. But the action looks tight and well worth the risk of nausea.

Carter hits Netflix like an airbore Jeep on August 5.
