Don’t look now, but Netflix has quietly taken over the mid-budget movie that studios have basically stopped making unless it has awards potential. You have Alison Brie’s Horse Girl coming, the latest Peter Berg movie with Mark Wahlberg, there’s a David Fincher movie coming (Mank), a Gina Prince-Bythewood flick with Charlize Theron, Ron Howard’s Hillbilly Elegy with Amy Adams, and lots more in the coming year.

Add the next Anne Hathaway and Ben Affleck joint, The Last Thing He Wanted, to that list. This one comes from Dee Rees, who you may remember as the writer/director of Mudbound, or you would if you have ever read anything written by Roxana because she has a lot of feelings about that movie.

Hathaway stars as a journalist working in D.C. who “loses the thread of her own narrative when a guilt-propelled errand for her father thrusts her from byline to unwitting subject in the very story she’s trying to break.” Willem Dafoe plays her father, and Ben Affleck plays a politician in the film based on Joan Didion’s 1997 novel of the same name.

The Last Thing He Wanted arrives at Netflix on February 21st.
