For millions, Fred Rogers and his cozy cardigans were a major, positive influence on their childhoods. With a smile, song, and puppets, Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood introduced children to lessons on politeness, to tales of wonder, and thoughtful peeks into the broader world. As I write this, I choke up remembering not so much a particular episode or moment, but just the warm and safe feeling the show always provided. Oscar-winning documentarian Morgan Neville (Twenty Feet from Stardom) will celebrate the man, the myth, the legend that is Fred Rogers in the upcoming doc, Won’t You Be My Neighbor?
Check out a charming clip below:
“Love is at the root of everything,” Rogers explains in the above clip, “All learning, all parenting, all relationships. Love or the lack of it. And what we see and hear on the screen is part of who we become.”
If that didn’t make you well up with happy tears, I dare you to stay dry-eyed while revisiting this PBS remix.
Focus Features will open Won’t You Be My Neighbor? in theaters on June 8th.
