If you can put aside your cynicism for a moment while watching the Mary Poppins Returns trailer, it’s hard not get caught up on it. The old Disney magic doesn’t do much for me, except when it does, and here, all that wonder from the original movies seems to remain perfectly intact, only instead of Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke, you’ve got Emily Blunt and Lin-Manuel Miranda (although Van Dyke makes an appearance).
It kind of feels wrong at first, but by the end, I just gave in and let it wash over me. It’s kind of like going to Disney World, which is to say: You appreciate it through the eyes of the kids, and kids are going to adore this movie.
Mary Poppins Returns opens on December 19th. It also stars Ben Wishaw, Angela Lansbury, Emily Mortimer, Colin Firth and Meryl Streep.
