Lionsgate is Betting on a 'Wonder'-ful Awards Season

What is this crushing, crippling feeling in my chest? Oh right, its my heart being manipulatively, yet successfully crushed to death by Lionsgate’s trailer for Wonder. Starring Jacob Tremblay (Room, The Book of Henry), Julia Roberts (Pretty Woman, My Best Friend’s Wedding) and Owen Wilson (Wedding Crashers, Midnight in Paris), Wonder is an adaptation of R.J. Palacio’s award winning children’s novel about a young boy named Auggie Pullman, who was born with a medical facial deformity and decides to attend school for the first time in his life.

Lionsgate is pushing HARD for Wonder to be their 2017 Big Awards Season Film. The film was originally supposed to be released in April 2017, but after receiving the highest audience test scores in the studio’s history, Lionsgate smelled awards potential in the water and moved to prime fall awards season estate in November.

I’m wary of whether it will actually bring home the hardware, but at the very least Wonder could reap a substantial cash bounty. Late fall, just before Christmas, is a good time to release an optimistic “plucky child overcomes obstacles” film with a requisite happy-to-bittersweet-ending where Everyone Learns A Lesson. Wonder will be released November 17th, 2017.
