Many years before he became king of our hearts and made the Pulitzer Prize-winning musical extravaganza Hamilton, Lin-Manuel Miranda made his Broadway debut with In The Heights. The musical, which he starred in as well as penning the music and lyrics, won the Tony for Best Musical and ran on Broadway for 1,184 performances. Since we probably won’t get a Hamilton movie for a few more years, it’s only fair that In The Heights gets its cinematic moment.

Directed by Jon M. Chu, hot off the success of Crazy Rich Asians, In The Heights features Anthony Ramos — the original Phillip Hamilton on Broadway — as Usnavi de la Vega, the part originated by Miranda. The slice of life show, depicting the residents of Washington Heights, also features Daphne Rubin-Vega, Dascha Polanco, Marc Anthony, Jimmy Smits, Stephanie Beatriz, and Corey Hawkins. Chu knows a thing or two about shooting dance scenes thanks to his work on the Step Up franchise and the musical itself is an infectiously appealing show that seems tailor-made for the Summer. The trailer even made me tear up a bit.

And now, please enjoy Miranda’s speech at the Tony Awards for when he won for In The Heights.
