Rian Johnson’s whodunnit mystery Knives Out has made over $250 million worldwide and proved to be a major box office hit with audiences over the Christmas break. Personally, everyone I’ve met who has seen the movie has been utterly rapturous in their praise for it, and with good reason. It’s great! Lionsgate will certainly be happy with the film’s critical and commercial response, which is especially exciting for an original property not based on a pre-existing title or franchise. Now, it looks like we could get even more detective adventures with Daniel Craig’s Benoit Blanc!

Johnson told The Hollywood Reporter that he was already hard at work in developing a sequel, centered on Blanc investigating a new case. While Lionsgate has not yet greenlit a sequel, it’s hard to see why they wouldn’t, given its success and the opportunity it offers to create a new franchise. If we must get even more of those decidedly meh Kenneth Branagh Poirot movies then it’s only fair that we get a Blanc expanded universe.

When Johnson talked to Kristy about the film last November, saying, of the possibility of a sequel, ‘I can’t think of anything more fun than every few years just doing a new one: with a new cast, new place, talk about some new stuff. And Daniel (Craig) and I had so much fun working together. I think that would just be a blast.’ When asked who he would love to be in such a film, he said Joseph Gordon-Levitt, a long-time friend and frequent cameo-maker in his works, and, ‘I want to get Laura Dern in here so badly […] Laura, if you’re reading this, I’m coming for you.’

I need new cases, new ensembles full of beloved actors having the time of their lives, more Murder She Wrote references, more amazing murder houses, and more of THAT accent! Daniel Craig should always be this hammy from now on.

This news comes hot off the announcement that Johnson received a nomination for best original screenplay from the WGA. He faces hot competition from 1917, Booksmart, Marriage Story, and Parasite. Johnson responded to the news with a wonderful tweet. His Twitter account may be the only reason to stay on the hell-site.
