After Melissa Barrera was fired from Scream 7 over Pro-Palestinian comments she made on social media, Jenna Ortega begged off the next installment, and Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett — the directing team that had revived the franchise — quit, there was a lot of uncertainty about the next installment.
In an Instagram post, Neve Campbell — who did not appear in the sixth installment because the franchise wouldn’t pay her appropriately — announced that she is not only returning but that Kevin Williamson, who wrote the original Scream, will also return to the franchise to direct.
If there was any way to renew interest in the waning franchise, this may have been it. However, it also feels like a big nostalgia play that may not work to attract younger audiences, many of whom will not forgive the production company for firing Barrera. On the other hand, at least this likely means that Dimension Films lured Campbell back with what is surely a handsome paycheck. It is also worth noting that Williamson has only one directing credit to his name, the underwhelming Teaching Mrs. Tingle.
