It’s officially December, which means we’re fully in the long slog through winter. Or, if you’re a more positive, pop culturally attuned type person, you could say that we’re officially in the four-month countdown to the release of Marvel’s next big thing, Captain Marvel! And what a thing it is: Not only is it the studio’s first solo film for a female superhero, but it’s also a nice cozy ’90s throwback — taking us all back to a time 20+ years before half our heroes were, uh, snapped to death by a certain Mad Titan. Think of it as a pleasant reprieve before Avengers 4: Who’s Left, Anyway hits theaters to remind us of our collective pain next May.

But back to all things Carol! No countdown is complete without a steady stream of hints to keep our interest piqued, and Marvel’s just dropped a good one in the form of this shiny new Captain Marvel trailer. Let’s take a look!

Proving that Marvel knows what works for them, this trailer kicks off with the highlight of the last one: Carol punching that old lady in the face. Only this time we see the old lady fight back! Because duh, she’s a Skrull — one of the bad guys. As opposed to Kree, a race of “noble warrior heroes,” as Carol is quick to point out to babyfaced Nick Fury (in case anyone had forgotten: Samuel L. Jackson and Clark Gregg are getting de-aged thanks for Hollywood magic in this!). And then the trailer shows us more of the Kree, and how Carol wound up with them. As Annette Bening explains, they found Carol on the verge of death, and remade her as one of them, making her… well, a super soldier. Basically. BUT AN ALIEN ONE.

From there we see Carol trying to piece together her memories from Earth and her own past, while bantering with Nick Fury. We see her explode in her full Binary-esque range of powers while flying through space (and yes, THERE IS FAUX-HAWK).

And then we meet a certain adorable orange cat… who catches Fury’s eye. So if you’ve ever wanted to know if Nick Fury has always been such a hard ass, the answer is “no — or at least not when faced with cute little fuzzy wuzzies!” I guess we can take this as confirmation that Chewie will indeed have a place in the film, and not just on that one poster!

Ahead of the trailer, Marvel also released a fresh poster for the film. And while the Overlords were quick to point out that it does a good job of not turning Carol into a spandex pinup (look! they managed to get a shot of a woman where her boobs and her butt aren’t miraculously somehow on display at the very same time!), I’m still struck by her flaming, Binary hair:

Captain Marvel will be dropping into a Blockbuster Video theaters on March 8, 2019.
