Who better to explain modern American race relations to audiences that Max Landis, right? His script for Bright mashed the fantasy genre into a cop drama about magic and Will Smith saying, “Fairy lives don’t matter.” It was a movie that seemed like it had to be a joke. But hey, Netflix said Bright was wildly popular on their streaming service, and has already threatened promised a sequel (though notably without Landis).
