2013’s Snowpiercer is still one of my favourite movies of recent times. Bong Joon-ho’s breakneck, bonkers vision, based on French graphic novel ‘Le Transperceneige’, is one of a frozen post-apocalyptic wasteland, doomed by an ill-thought-out attempt at engineering a quick fix for global warming. The only remaining survivors in this world are those that managed to board the titular train when catastrophe struck, and who now live inside it as it perpetually speeds its way along a set of tracks that encircles the white-covered globe. The train’s engine—and its creator—is a symbol of worship, and the society onboard is one heavily stratified by levels of relative privilege in a picture of neo-Victorian regression. It’s a film of striking, gonzo imagery; richly thematic (and timely) resonance; thrilling bursts of action; and powerful performances from a quite formidable cast (Chris Evans, John Hurt, Octavia Spencer, Song Kang-ho, Tilda Swinton, Ed Harris, and Jamie Bell). It’s also a flick that was filmed mostly in my home (hmm, ‘home’ town—is your home town the one you were born in, or the one you call home?) town of Prague, so—you know, it’s got that going for it too.

Snowpiercer is now also the subject of a brand new internet fan theory. Now, I’ve read a lot of fan theories in my time. Like, a lot. Too many. Your brain starts to turn to mush when you absorb too much of that wild, sometimes way too convincing, gibberish. But this theory—that Snowpiercer is actually a secret sequel to Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory—is definitely my new favourite. Check it out (obviously, a wealth of spoilers abound):
