In Honor of Stanley Donen, Let’s Bring Back Musicals Like 'Singing in the Rain'

Yesterday I spread my joy around like a bad cold when I said what at least some of us were thinking—Marvel’s superhero movies are played out, and not particularly inclusive. Today, let’s take a different approach—let’s revel in the things that make us happy, and for me that’s musicals.

I went down a YouTube clip hole yesterday with the news of the passing of Stanley Donen, who directed one of the greatest musicals of all time, Singing in the Rain.

I love a good old-fashioned musical, and Donen was the last man standing of the greats. Responsible for Singing in the Rain, On the Town, Royal Wedding, Damn Yankees and more, his impact on the genre is profound.

Honestly, I don’t know why there aren’t more singing and dancing spectacles, they’re great.

Nothing truly bad ever happens in a musical (although side eye to Mama Mia 2, right now), and by the end, the characters have danced their troubles away (literally) and all is right in the world.

Sure, every five years or so, they’ll put out a Chicago, or a Hail, Caesar! but that’s not enough.

I’ll make everyone a deal. I’ll stop complaining about the non-stop deluge of superhero movies if somehow for everyone superhero movie, there’s a musical released, too.

Sounds fair, right?

A good musical, one with a budget and cast behind it to back it up.

So do we have a deal?

Great. Share you favorite numbers in the comments, and let’s make this happen!
