I didn’t know that Ben Affleck had a new girlfriend until yesterday, and from what I’ve seen of Ana de Armas (Knives Out, Blade Runner 2049), I’m a fan (she’s also in a movie with Rosamund Pike and Joel Kinnamon called The Informer out in limited release this weekend).

Being a curious person, I wondered how they met, and IMDB was quick to solve that mystery. The two recently worked together on a film called Deep Water. I am deeply fascinated by this film. Adrian Lyne directs, and Lyne hasn’t directed a movie since he f**ked us all in the head with Unfaithful in 2002. Lyne is also behind some great but also really f**ked up movies that haven’t aged well like, well, Lolita, 9 1/2 Weeks, Fatal Attraction and Jacob’s Ladder. Lyne is very much into sexually provocative headf**ks.

Deep Water is no exception. The movie is based on a Patricia Highsmith novel of the same name, and it’s basically the Gone Girl of 1957. Zach Helm (Stranger than Fiction) adapted the movie for the screen, and in it, Affleck plays a cuckold. Literally. He plays Vic Van Allen, who is in a loveless marriage with his wife, Melinda (Ana de Armas). They have an arrangement, however, where instead of divorcing, Vic allows his wife to sleep with other men. He even hangs out with the other dudes and has drinks with them before they take his wife upstairs. But twist: Vic and his jealousy streak acquire a thirst for murder.

I won’t say any more beyond that, except that it’s perfect for Adrian Lyne, who is pushing 80. He has amassed an impressive cast here that also includes Finn Wittrock and Jacob Elordi, who I assume play lovers of Melinda. Interesting side note: Deep Water is an “erotic thriller” from 20th Century [Fox], now owned by Disney, which technically makes Deep Water the first erotic thriller released by Disney since 1994’s Bruce Willis film Color of Night.

Deep Water opens on November 13th, which gives you plenty of time to read Highsmith’s novel.
