The BAFTA nominations are out, and they are infuriating. But not all nomination committees are so narrow in their view of cinema or talent. Let us turn to the nominees for the Dorian Awards, where Bong Joon-ho’s Parasite and Céline Sciamma’s Portrait of a Lady on Fire lead the pack with 6 nominations each. Then in TV, Schitt’s Creek got a lot of love and 5 nominations ahead of its final season.
In its 11th year, the Dorian Awards are chosen by the GALECA, The Society of LGBTQ Entertainment Critics. As such, the awards not only include categories like Film of the Year, but also LGBTQ Film Of The Year, Campy Film Of The Year, and Unsung Film of the Year, allowing love to be bestowed on excellent offerings like Booksmart, The Last Black Man In San Francisco, Pain and Glory, and one of my personal favorites, Scream, Queen! My Nightmare on Elm Street.
Full Disclosure: I’m a proud GALECA member and voter. And yes, I did vote for Serenity.
