'First Wives Club's Bette Midler, Goldie Hawn and Diane Keaton Reteam For New Comedy

Bette Midler. Goldie Hawn. Diane Keaton. These three living legends combined their mega-watt star power and comedy chops in the 1996 classic The First Wives Club. Now, the daffy divas are reteaming once more for a hotly anticipated encore. It’s not a sequel, it’s Family Jewels.

THR reports Family Jewels is a multi-generational comedy with a macabre inciting incident. Midler, Hawn, and Keaton will all play ex-wives to the same man, who “drops dead in a New York City department store” right before Christmas. To help their respective children and grandchildren heal, they all come together for the holidays, and—presumably—hijinks ensue.

I’m unreservedly stoked to see these three reuniting for another comedy about the complicated ties that bind and sometimes suffocate. However, I have a slight concern the premise might lean into tedious catfighting tropes and miss out of the First Wives Club-style fun of watching three very different women come together for a common goal.

Family Jewels’ screenwriter Peter Hoare is chiefly known crafting for dude-centered comedies like Killing Hasselhoff, Kevin Can Wait, and the new release Standing Up, Falling Down, which co-stars Billy Crystal and Jean-Ralphio Ben Schwartz. So how will he fare with a comedy about female friendship and wifely rivalries?

Though the film’s producers are hoping to roll into production before the end of the year, the project doesn’t currently have a director attached. Who would you like to see take the helm of Family Jewels? Sound off in comments.
