Will Smith Gemini Man Trailer

2019 could be a big year for Will Smith. It could also be a bit of a disaster. He has three movies with major releases this year, and while the megastar’s A-List status has waned somewhat over the past decade in terms of commercial clout, there are few actors working today who are so beloved by audiences as Smith. That charm has never been diminished, even by terrible terrible movies. We’ll soon hear him in Spies in Disguise, a Blue Sky animated movie with perhaps the best mid-trailer twist ever. Next month sees the release of Aladdin, with Smith blue-ing himself to play the Genie, and hoo boy that movie could go either way. And then there is Gemini Man, the trailer for which just dropped today.

An original sci-fi blockbuster, something that’s an increasing rarity in today’s Hollywood market, Gemini Man has a slew of big names attached: Smith stars alongside Clive Owen and Mary Elizabeth Winstead, the iconic Jerry Bruckheimer produces, David Benioff of Game of Thrones fame is one of many people who worked on the script, and two-time Oscar winner Ang Lee is directing (and wow Lee’s career is a fascinating mish-mash of styles, ideas and genres that makes for one of the more erratic and fascinating filmographies of any major director working today).

The film centres on an ageing assassin who has to fight mysterious force who also happens to be a younger clone of himself. This movie has been floating around Hollywood since 1997, when Tony Scott was attached to direct it. Everyone from Sean Connery to Harrison Ford to Nic Cage was set to play the lead role(s), but the tech wasn’t ready. Now we’re in an era where de-aging CGI is near seamless, so Skydance Media (the studio who brought John f*cking Lasseter back into the big time) acquired it.

It will be fascinating to see if audiences are hungry for Gemini Man. Will Smith used to be able to open movies like this to record breaking numbers in his sleep. Remember, this is the dude who made Hancock one of the highest grossing movies of its year. His international appeal is still pretty major too. The film will open domestically against The Addams Family and Zombieland: Double Tap, although it was originally supposed to come out the week before in competition with Joker. It’s not a dazzlingly original concept - hi, Looper and the third act of Logan - but hey, there’s a reason we all still love Will Smith
