You probably Sia as the eccentric pop star with an in-her-face wig and a string of hit songs that include “Chandelier,” “Cheap Thrills,” and “Elastic Heart.” You might know she’s also a masterful songwriter, whose penned amazing lyrics not only for herself but also for Alicia Keys, Beyoncé, Kylie Minogue, Flo Rida and Rihanna. Maybe you know that she’s also been building her cred as a director, co-helming a slew of her own music videos. However, did you know that this Australian pop goddess has been finalizing her first movie?
Music will be Sia’s feature directorial debut. She’s offered an intriguing first look with a music video called “Together,” which boasts Kate Hudson, Hamilton’s Leslie Odom Jr., and Maddie Ziegler, the young dancer who’s proved iconic with her electric collaborations with Sia.
Check it out.
Emoji hand dresses. A giddy kiddie chorus. Rainbows rainbows rainbows. What does it all mean? Music’s logline hints at an explanation.

Based on a short story Sia wrote in 2007, Music was co-written with Dallas Clayton and follows Zu (Hudson), a newly sober woman figuring out her place in the world when she learns she is to become the sole guardian of her half-sister, Music (Ziegler), a young girl on the autism spectrum.
The press release proclaims, “The film explores two of Sia’s favorite themes — finding your voice and what it means to create family.”
Considering this mesmerizing musical artist has been public with her struggles with addiction and recently revealed she’s adopted two sons, it sounds like Music was born from a pretty personal place. Still, we don’t know much about the story, including what role Odom plays in the sisters’ lives. However, this video suggests that the titular character, played by Ziegler, will have a deep connection to music. Perhaps this vibrant dance number is an example of how Sia will take us into the girl’s rich inner life in a dynamic and cinematic way.
Music will feature ten original songs, which will likewise appear on an accompanying Sia album. The movie musical also stars Hector Elizondo, Mary Kay Place, and Tig Notaro. Plus, its dances will be created by recurring collaborator, Ryan Heffington, the acclaimed choreographer from Baby Driver, Pose and RuPaul’s Drag Race . To be honest, you had us at Sia. Everything else is exploding rainbows on top.
Music is expected to be released in September.
