Poor Things is the latest creation from Yorgos Lanthimos, the director behind The Favourite and The Lobster, and writer Tony McNamara (The Favourite, The Great, Cruella). Emma Stone is obviously a frequent collaborator with both Lanthimos and McNamara, and here they have something akin to a steampunk Frankenstein story. Stone plays Bella, “an experiment” whose brain and body are not quite synchronized, which provides Stone with some interesting acting opportunities.
Willem Dafoe plays the Dr. Frankenstein type (obviously), a “brilliant and unorthodox scientist,” and Mark Ruffalo is the love interest (?). Jerrod Carmichael and Ramy Youssef round out the cast, along with Margaret Qualley and Christopher Abbott, who do not appear in the trailer.
Here’s the trailer (and take special note of that duck/dog in the opening moments).
Poor Things opens on September 8th.
