Donald Glover is a huge star. He’s getting shows and movies made thanks to his name. He’s attending the Met Gala. The man is big and busy. It’s hard to remember a time when he was just a member of the viral sketch group Derrick Comedy, or when he was just the goofy guy on Community. Glover’s level of fame has risen, so people have assumed his busy schedule has gotten in the way of the Community movie.
Yes, a Community movie is on the way. After joking about producing six seasons and a movie for years, the film is on its way and headed to Peacock. Creator Dan Harmon will write it and most of the main cast is expected to return. However, the film was announced almost two years ago and has yet to start filming. Many people have assumed Donald Glover’s busy schedule has held up the film and he’s setting the record straight.
Glover spoke to Deadline about the status of the anticipated movie. “It’s happening but I don’t know when. I swear, it’s happening,” the star told the outlet. He also addressed rumors that his schedule was holding the movie up. “Everybody is hating on me on the internet and it’s not me,” Glover said. “They’re like, ‘We know that you’re the reason.’ Maybe I was last year — maybe — but not this time.”
It’s a positive update! We still don’t know the extent of Glover’s role in the film (or anyone’s, for that matter). Him being so publicly gung-ho about it is encouraging. There is more of a chance that Harmon is the one holding things back. The creator has spoken about ensuring he gets the film right. He’s already gotten into hot water discussing the script’s status. He wants to make a good movie, and that’s not bad.
Fans will have to take rumors with a grain of salt. We’ll have to wait and assume, for now, that no news is good news. The movie is happening. It just may not happen as soon as we want. Just don’t blame Donald Glover if it takes longer than you’d want.
