I’ve been writing about the “upcoming” movie The New Mutants since May of 2016. On October 13, 2017, the first trailer for the X-Men spinoff was shared and gave us a release date of April 13, 2018.

The movie stars Anya Taylor-Joy (Glass) as Magik, Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones) as Wolfsbane, Charlie Heaton (Stranger Things) as Cannonball, Henry Zaga (Teen Wolf) as Sunspot, and Blu Hunt (The Originals) as Mirage, as shown in this first teaser.

Reshoots, purportedly to add a new mutant, took place in February 2018 and the release date fell to February 2019. Another push to August 2, 2019, and then finally to April 3, 2020, followed.

Disney and Marvel Studios were the new owners of the previously Fox-owned film and mutants, leading to speculation that the studios wanted the X-Men franchise to die so it could be reborn. This was especially rampant after the disastrous box office of Dark Phoenix in June 2019. No one expected the already limping The New Mutants to make it to theaters.

Then, on January 6, 2020, everyone was very surprised to see a brand new trailer for The New Mutants hit the web.

Still going with April 3, 2020, eh?

Director Josh Boone even shared the trailer on his Instagram and assured questioning fans that his original vision of the film was the one hitting theaters, adding that he wouldn’t be promoting it if it wasn’t.

I don’t see any new characters in the new trailer. It also uses the same cover of Pink Floyd’s “The Wall” throughout, as well as some of the same shots from the first teaser. So is this yet another round of Disney dangling a leftover Fox property in front of us before ripping it away at the last second or is the House of Mouse prepared to let the troubled movie be the final adamantium nail in the coffin of the existing X-Men franchise?

I think The New Mutants looks like an interesting flick, staying away from costumes, supposedly, and Big Bad the heroes are meant to take on. It’s dark, claustrophobic, and likely holds surprises for those of us less steeped in the comic history of the featured characters and storyline muse for the flick.

However, I’m not completely convinced the movie will make it to theaters unless the online buzz erupts into a low-to-mid-level fervor that prompts Disney to keep it on the slate. Only time will tell if we finally get to see what Boone has in store with his haunted house X-Men story on April 3.
