This is an interesting development.

David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, who last we heard were developing Confederate for HBO despite a massive backlash against the premise, have apparently abandoned those plans. They will, instead, follow up Game of Thrones with Star Wars.

It was announced today that Benioff and Weiss, creators of the smash-hit, Emmy Award-winning television series Game of Thrones, will write and produce a new series of Star Wars films.

These new films will be separate from both the episodic Skywalker saga and the recently-announced trilogy being developed by Rian Johnson, writer-director of Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

No other details were provided, but I suppose that once Star Wars exhausts its stand-alone entries, it will need another series to fill in the gap years in between Rian Johnson’s next trilogy, which means we’ll see a whole lot of Star Wars in our futures, with a lot more characters yet to be introduced into that universe. Maybe we’ll get some of those R-Rated Star Wars movies that no one has been asking for (but that I am asking for now).

This news does not necessarily mean that they have completely abandoned Confederate, but it certainly seems that the project has died on the vine over on HBO. Good riddance.
