Chris Hemsworth loves playing Thor. He doesn’t just bring rock-hard abs and a swoon-inducing smile to the God of Thunder. He also brings a radiant mirth for every aspect of this ever-evolving Avenger, be it in Thor: Ragnarok where he got knocked down a peg, in the playful One-Shot where he had a beleaguered human roommate named Darryl, or in Avengers: Endgame, where the golden boy got a Big Lebowski-styled makeover. And in a new behind-the-scenes video that Hemsworth has shared online, we see the Australian star loves Thor so much, he even plays him outside of official MCU titles.

In this instance, he plays Thor as a hero who wears his hurt on his sleeve and his guitar on his gut.

The internet was quick to dub Hemworth’s Avengers: Endgame incarnation “Fat Thor.” And this makeover revelation was controversial. Some argued that the jokes made at the expense of Thor’s expanded waistline were fat-shaming. Some argued that it was empowering for plus-sized people to see a superhero who looked like them and was no less mighty for it. Some of us thought Fat Thor was a total snack. But most agreed that Hemsworth didn’t play Thor’s size as a joke, but rather as a part of how grief and shame had shaped him in a post-snap world.

In the video above, Hemsworth plays with this by expressing Thor’s pain with “Hurt,” a song released by Nine Inch Nails in 1995. However, it’s probably best known for Johnny Cash’s heart-wrenching 2002 cover, which got renewed popularity when it was used to scorching effect in the Logan trailer.

Which begs the question: does Logan exist in the MCU? And if so, is Thor a fan? Or is he just hitting that “let me wallow in my depression” mix on Spotify? Feel free to speculate wildly how this cheeky video shapes the MCU canon.

In other Hemsworth news: he’s fronting Men In Black: International opposite his Thor: Ragnarok co-star Tessa Thompson. It opens Friday. Our review is coming soon.
