It is a truth universally acknowledged that Mad Max: Fury Road is an action masterpiece. It was a technical marvel and gave women the kind of hero that they had been longing for (not to mention some great cosplay ideas) in Imperator Furiosa, played with absolute ferocity by Charlize Theron. Fury Road did well but not great at the box office, but solid word of mouth and taking home a number of Oscars managed to secure its place in Valhalla and in our hearts.

Despite a difficult shoot, Theron recently told ScreenRant while on the promotional trail for Tully that she is eager to return to the desert and don the mechanical arm once again.

“I hope so. I love that character. I loved working with George Miller, and if he was ever on board, yeah. I mean, I would be in right from the beginning. With him (George Miller) it’s kind of like working with Jason Reitman. I wouldn’t even need to see a script, I trust him that much and it’s great when you have that with a filmmaker.”

Would that it t’were so simple. Miller has expressed his interest in doing another film centered around Tom Hardy’s Max (tentatively titled Mad Max: The Wasteland), as well as a Furiosa spinoff, but he remains locked in a bitter legal battle with Warner Brothers over unpaid earnings. According to the Sydney Morning Herald, these movies may never actually come to fruition because of this dispute:

“The director’s production company, Kennedy Miller Mitchell, has claimed in a document… that the studio acted in a ‘high-handed, insulting, or reprehensible’ manner. And by ‘destroying’ the relationship of trust by allegedly refusing to pay a bonus for delivering the movie under budget and breaching a co-financing agreement, they were unable to work together to make any further installments.”

“The production company has claimed Fury Road cost $154.6 million; the studio claimed it blew out to $185.1 million. Warner Bros alleged that instead of a 120-minute movie that was rated R in the United States… the contract required the company to make a 100-minute movie that was rated no harder than PG-13.”

Oh. Fury Road has only become more beloved with time, so it’s a pretty safe bet that a sequel would be a success, but these behind the scenes issues don’t seem to be going away any time soon. Perhaps we should be content with the cinematic perfection that we were gifted with once instead of getting greedy, but it would be a real shame if Furiosa never got another shot to dole out her particular brand of justice.
