Bryan Singer will not go away. We thought he’d go away for a while after he was sacked from directing Bohemian Rhapsody but then all of a sudden he’s allegedly getting $10m to direct a Red Sonja movie, so we know how Hollywood feels about #MeToo. Singer has been mired in as many rumours as Harvey Weinstein was at his abusive peak. It seemed like there was going to be a big news story about the many allegations of sexual harassment and assault sometime last year when the Kevin Spacey story broke but nothing happened.

Now, it looks like we’re going to get a story courtesy of Esquire, and Singer is trying to nip things in the bud via Instagram.

Singer is still credited as a co-director on Bohemian Rhapsody, which comes out this month.

Even by the standards of accused abusers, this is an astoundingly arrogant statement. It tries to harness the misogyny and entrenched power dynamics behind ‘false accusations’ to paint himself as the real victim, it includes call-backs to numerous lawsuits he has faced, and it tries to paint the story as a way to tarnish a movie. Keep in mind I highly doubt anyone is excited to see a Freddie Mercury biopic because of Bryan Singer. Indeed, most people I know are seeing it in spite of his involvement, while some are skipping it altogether because they don’t want to give Singer further Hollywood clout.

I hope this story has a real impact. Singer has managed to dodge any form of accountability for over two decades. He’s managed to repeatedly book big-budget high-profile gigs despite the multiple accusations against him as well as his very well-known reputation for being late on sets or just not turning up at all. Everyone in Hollywood knows what he’s accused of doing. It’s as big an open secret as Harvey Weinstein was. Yet a studio still wants to give him an 8-figure payday to direct a movie of an iconic comic book heroine.

If Singer falls, so do a lot of powerful men, and frankly, that’s why I think he won’t ever fall.
