A lot of last weekend’s headlines were focused on how Pixar’s much-hyped Toy Story 4 didn’t quite meet the gargantuan box office standards expected of it. It’s true that experts were predicting it would make a lot more than it did, but in what has been a very weird season for the box office, it was hardly a failure. Disney failing is a totally different standard of failing compared to us mere mortals anyway. And in its second week of release, the toys managed to hold onto the top spot.

Despite a 52% drop, Toy Story 4 still took in just under $58 million, close to three times what its closest competitor grossed this weekend. That brings its domestic total to just under $237 million and sees its worldwide total close to $497 million. One interesting aspect of its international gross has been how the film was trounced at the box office in China by the release of Studio Ghibli’s Spirited Away. 18 years after its initial release, the movie finally premiered in China and fans gobbled it up. As noted by the BBC, Chinese viewers had grown up with the movie thanks to DVD releases and bootlegs, so Hayao Miyazaki’s masterpiece was hardly unknown when it landed in theatres. It remains Ghibli’s highest grossing title.

Opening this weekend was the latest release in the surprisingly complex Conjuring saga, Annabelle Comes Home. As expected for this sturdy franchise, the film did solid business with a $20.3 million opening weekend and total domestic gross of $31.2 million. That’s still a low point for the series, especially compared to 2018’s The Nun, but in the shadow of Pixar, it’s nothing to sneeze at, and this franchise is a reliable money-making for Warner Bros. in the way that low budget horror series typically are.

Debuting at number three is Yesterday, which made a respectable $17 million from 2603 theatres (a solid thousand less than Annabelle Comes Home). As noted by Box Office Mojo in their coverage of the weekend, it’s tough to find a direct comparison for this film to gauge how well it’s done. It’s not a biopic but relies heavily on biopic-esque marketing. It’s a mid-budget drama intended more for adults than kids but it’s not one we’ve really seen before. It’s a musical but not really but kind of yes it is? But it’s The Beatles, so does any of that really matter?

Of course, we have to mention Avengers: Endgame, which Disney expanded into an extra thousand or so locations this weekend to show off some previously unreleased content that was just for the fans and not because they’re desperate to beat the highest grossing film ever record set by Avatar. Well, it did okay? An extra $5.5 million or so domestically is nothing to sneeze at. But honestly, I don’t think this thing is passing James Cameron’s big blue baby. Sorry, Disney. But hey, you own Avatar now so you’ll always win!

This coming week sees the release of Spider-Man: Far From Home and Midsommar.
